BWA has produced a booklet ‘50 Ways to Better Walking‘ that sets out 50 ways in which the walking environment in Bristol could be improved.
It is intended to persuade politicians, council officials and others that much more could be done to encourage and enable more people to walk as their first choice for local journeys.
The booklet provides a range of measures that require policy commitments and funding from central, regional and local government, as well as support from businesses, the voluntary sector and communities.
Based on the ten walking-related actions outlined in the Bristol Transport Strategy 2019, the booklet sets out 50 actions ranging from removing pavement obstructions to allocating a greater proportion of transport funding to improving walking routes.
While individual transport schemes such as Liveable Neighbourhoods, School Streets, and pedestrianisation are important, the greatest benefits will be achieved by integrating a range of actions to improve the walking environment as a whole.
The first edition of the booklet was published in October 2021, funded by Bristol Health Partners and the SHINE health integration team. The second edition, published in October 2024, was funded by Let’s Walk Bedminster and some members of the BWA executive committee. While keeping the overall format and most of the proposed actions from the first edition, the second edition has removed some duplication and better aligned the actions with current ambitions.
