A4 Bath to Bristol again

BWA has responded to the third round of consultations on improvements to the A4 route between Bath and Bristol. We previously responded to the first round in 2021 and the second round in 2023. This time, the proposals have been scaled back to only apply to some sections of the route.

For Bristol, the latest proposals focus on improvements in Arnos Vale and Brislington, but defer to a later date any proposals for other sections of the route. In our response, we support the proposals in 2025 which provide many new pedestrian crossings as well as bus stop improvements.

However, we continue to regret that the proposals for the A4 do not yet cover the section between Bath Bridge and Three Lamps junction in Bristol, where the narrow footway on the east side of this road is currently shared between pedestrians and cyclists, and is woefully inadequate for the amount of walking and cycling traffic it supports. [BCC has initiated a feasibility study for new pedestrian/cycling bridges over the river and railway to provide the necessary extra width. However, WECA has not yet allocated any transport infrastructure funding towards this.]
