The event will focus on walking in the city. The focus of this discussion will be on the city’s walking network, and the need to take this seriously as an essential part of Bristol’s transport network. The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust’s Walking and Cycling Index estimates that 62% of Bristol residents walk or wheel at least 5 days a week, significantly more than in many other urban areas across the UK. They do so on a network of pavements, underpasses, bridges, paths, and trails that is not always given the same levels of attention and investment as the road network. Motor vehicle traffic is often carefully measured and modelled across the city, in part to manage traffic, but despite the volume of pedestrian movement much less is known about where this walking happens and therefore what counts as the city’s critical walking infrastructure and where new investment may be needed.

To explore some of the key issues around Bristol’s walking infrastructure, we have two exciting presentations planned.

  1. Zoe Banks-Gross of the Bristol Walking Alliance will give us a broader view on the current issues around walking in the city and the work the Alliance does to advocate for pedestrians in Bristol.
  2. Dr Jonathan Flower (Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Transport and Society) will talk about his research on the impacts of disruption to key pedestrian infrastructure in Bristol and recent thinking on Active Travel network planning.

Followed by Q and A and a discussion.
