20mph Speed Limit Consultation 2026

BWA has responded to the current Bristol City Council 20mph speed limit consultation 2026. It is proposed that speed limits are reduced from 30mph to 20mph on most residential roads in the Bristol area that do not already have a 20mph limit.

In BWA’s response, we welcome these proposals, pointing out that in a vehicle collision with a pedestrian, every 1mph above 20mph increases the chance of a fatality by 15%.

This response follows our submission to the BCC Transport Committee Group on Road Safety Strategy where we listed excessive vehicle speed as a critical issue for pedestrians in Bristol.
