Bristol City Council are developing a new Road Safety Strategy at the end of the 10-year period covered by the previous one. The Transport and Connectivity Committee has set up a Task and Finish Group to agree the principles, objectives and delivery of the new strategy.
BWA has submitted our input to the Group and given a short presentation on it alongside other stakeholders. We see three critical issues for pedestrians in Bristol:
- excessive vehicle speed
- insufficient formal crossings
- footway obstructions (forcing pedestrians into the road)
Our input sets out what we see as priorities for action. It shows what could be learnt from Oslo, a city that has been successful in reducing pedestrian casuaty rates. It also lists a number of other points a successful road safety strategy should address.
